Elderly Cancun bakery owner fights back against virtual extortion call from Mexico City prison

Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun bakery owner has been able to remain in business after police intervention in a virtual extortion attempt. Cancun authorities say they intervened after learning the elderly owner of Panadería Chiapas in SM 259 had received a virtual extortion call.

After visiting the owner of the Cancun bakery, an official complaint was filed and an investigation started into the origin of the caller. The call, police said, originated from a men’s prison in Mexico City.

Cancun police said the caller from the Reclusorio Preventivo Varonil Norte prison in Mexico City was making random calls hoping to claim a victim through threats who would then make a money deposit.

The woman has since been notified that the calls will stop and that she can resume her business.

“FGE Quintana Roo reports that after learning through social networks the case of alleged extortion denounced by the owner of Panadería Chiapas in SM 259 of Cancun, took immediate measures checking it was a call with the attempt of “virtual extortion” from a CDMX prison.

“Elements of the Investigation Police of the FGE Prosecutor’s Office and the Centurion Group went to the establishment to provide support and urged victims to file their complaint.

“Thanks to this, a investigation could be initiated that allowed police to detect, after the performance of the cyber police, that the intimidation calls came from the men’s Northern Preventive Prison in Mexico City, who called randomly looking for a victim to fall into their deception and make a deposit.

“In the above, the interested parties were informed so that they can continue their business with peace of mind. The Prosecutor’s Office reiterates its commitment to act promptly to combat these crimes and protect citizens, so it urges to trust the authorities.
