Cancun, Q.R. — The City of Cancun is analyzing the construction of the first of three buildings for vertical parking. One of the parking structures that could accommodate 70 vehicles would be built in an old lot in SM 22.
Carlos del Castillo, the Director of Administrative Management for the Cancun district, said the city is looking into three such projects. The vertical parking projects are being considered as a solution to the problem of the lack of parking in downtown Cancun.
One of them, and the one with the greatest progress in terms of management with the Government of Benito Juárez, would be located in the extinct Cine Blanquita lot in Supermanzana 22 which currently has space for 70 vehicles.
“There is room for 70 vehicles in that space. There is an agreement with Cinépolis and a process to build a vertical parking lot. It is the time for vertical establishments in the area,” he said.
Two other vertical parking lots are also being looked into for their possible construction. One parking building would be in SM 2 and the other in SM 5.
“There are three areas being analyzed for the installation of vertical parking. One in Supermanzana 22 in what was known as Cine Blanquita and two others in Supermanzanas 2 and 5,” he said.
While the first project analysis is being finalized, he explained there are other areas in the city centre that could be used. Among these spaces are the Cecilio Chi esplanade with around 100 potential spaces and the Parque de la Palapas with 200 spaces.

He stressed that the implementation of vertical parking is an innovative solution to the problem of parking in the city centre. Vertical parking lots can accommodate a greater number of vehicles in a smaller space, freeing up areas for other uses.
Carlos del Castillo says that these parking buildings can be designed with security and comfort features for users, such as controlled access systems and waiting areas.
