Cancun, Q.R. — A fleet of 100 new public buses has arrived for the city of Cancun. Authorities announced their arrival Tuesday. According to Governor Mara Lezama, the new buses will be used to transport passengers on four new Cancun Hotel Zone routes.
Lezama said initially, the new buses will be used on the new routes that include Lakin – Hotel Zone, Rejoyada – Hotel Zone, La Joya – Hotel Zone and 20 de Noviembre – Hotel Zone.
“We launched four urban transportation routes which will transport thousands of people daily to the Hotel Zone through an orderly corridor with a unified image. With these new units, the fleet grows 12%, substantially improving mobility in this world-class destination,” she reported Tuesday.
The new buses are equipped with technology that includes a prepaid swipe card system.
Cancun mayor Ana Paty Peralta de la Peña was also on hand for the official announcement of the new city buses that began operating the Kabah Avenue cooridor Tuesday.
Lezama congratulated the three city concessionaire companies Autocar Cancún, Transportation Turística Urbana de Cancún and Sociedad Cooperativa de Transportes Maya Caribe, who operate the city’s public transport services.
Lezama said the new buses are part of company service improvements and that intermunicipal routes into neighboring Isla Mujeres are also considered on Av. Tulum, Kabah, Rancho Viejo, Chac Mool and Nichupté.
The new buses are a two-year project between the state and the city.
