Cancun’s popular Playa Delfines in Hotel Zone up for Natural Protected Area status

Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun’s popular inner-city beach, Playa Delfines, is slated to become a Protected Natural Area. The announcement came from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).

The agency issued a public notice saying that Cancun’s iconic Playa Delfines, also known as El Mirador, is slated to be converted into a Protected Natural Area.

The popular Cancun Hotel Zone beach is slated to be converted into a Protected Natural Area (ANP) along with the San Buenaventura lands, next to the Malecón Tajamar in Cancun.

According to the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources, an area of 4.8 hectares will be given the status Flora and Fauna Protection Area. Semarnat said another 37.9 hectares of green area is also under the character of Flora and Fauna Protection Area.

Those hectares correspond to the lands owned by Fonatur known as San Buenaventura. The city’s beach is part of four proposed areas to be protected under federal laws.
