Cancun, Q.R.– More than 500 motorcycles have been impounded in Cancun during an ongoing road safety operation. Police in Cancun started the operation in early November, stopping motorcycle drivers to review their documents.

To date, more than 1,500 bikes have been found with violations. According to the Municipal Secretariat for Citizen Security and Traffic (SMSCYT) in November, over 500 motorcycles have been impounded for failing to comply with the necessary paperwork to travel city streets.
However, not all the motorcycle drivers stopped failed to have the proper documents. Some of the driver’s stopped were on bikes reported stolen.
The Secretaría Municipal de Seguridad Ciudadana y Tránsito de Benito Juárez (SMSCYT) says so far this month, the operation has resulted in 500 motorcycles being sent to the impound lot for traveling without the necessary documents. The SMSCYT says that is in violation of Article 88, Section II of the Traffic Regulations.
In addition to the 500 impounded bikes, a total of 59 motorcycle drivers were fined for driving on sidewalks, which they say, creates a risk for pedestrians. Another 1,515 motorcycles were found with irregularities including in the license plates, driver’s licenses and registration cards. Out of the 1,515, some were reported as stolen.

Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta says the city is promoting the Road Safety Operation for Motorcyclists, which will continue to be implemented permanently at strategic points in Cancun.
In November, 28 inspection points have been set up around the city. The main objective of this program, she says, is to promote respect for traffic regulations and encourage safe driving.
