Cancun Transit officers suspended after video of altercation with citizens

Cancun, Q.R. — Two Cancun Transit officers videoed in a physical altercation during a traffic stop have been suspended. The officers were videoed by a home surveillance system participating in a physical fight with two city residents, one of whom was a minor.

On Monday, Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta announced her ordered suspension of the officers.

“In our city, no aggression by our security elements towards citizens will be tolerated. I have ordered the immediate suspension of two traffic officers who were involved in the probable commission of improper acts with a citizen and a minor.

This government will collaborate, in this and all cases, with the competent authorities to define the corresponding sanctions,” she said in a public statement.

The Municipal Secretariat for Citizen Security and Transit (SMSCT) announced the opening of an investigation ( file #SMSPT/DAI/282/10/2024) by the Directorate of Internal Affairs.

The two officers from the Traffic Department are being investigated for alleged conduct that contravenes the corporation’s current regulations.

The incident occurred Sunday in a residential area near Bonampak Avenue when the adult driver of a cargo truck was stopped for a traffic violation. Both the driver and minor got out of the truck to talk with motorcycle transit officers. Within minutes, one officer began to fight with the man.

The minor, a boy, stepped in, at which time the second officer was videoed fighting with the boy. That physical altercation lead to both falling onto the street and into the city-issued motorcycle that fell over as a result.

If the investigations reveal criminal conduct, the Internal Affairs Directorate will inform the Attorney General’s Office so that appropriate measures can be taken and official charges laid.
