Cancun, Q.R. — Two Cancun taxi drivers are facing a series of charges after being captured on video beating an airport driver. On Tuesday, taxi drivers Enrique “N” and Javier Isaías “N” were videoed beating another driver who also operated out of the Cancun International Airport.
In an official statement from the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), the men beat the digital platform driver when he refused to continue paying them extortion money. “ Initial investigations indicate that they extorted the victim on two occasions. Once for 10,000 and another for 7,000 pesos, so that they would let him work at the Cancun Airport,” the FGE reported Thursday afternoon.
Both men have been arrested. On Thursday, the State Attorney General (FGE) said the state will also request the revocation of their taxi licenses. “The FGE will request the revocation of their taxi licenses and will go to the last consequences dictated by law to prevent impunity for their acts,” they said.
“The State Attorney General’s Office reports that it arrested two individuals, taxi drivers by occupation, for their probable participation in acts that probably constitute the crime of extortion against a male person,” they reported.
“Enrique “N” and Javier Isaías “N” were arrested for their probable participation in the crime of injuries and robbery, when they attacked the victim, a driver of a digital transportation platform, whom they also allegedly extorted.
“When the victim refused to continue paying them on July 22 of this year, Enrique “N” and Javier Isaías “N” attacked him when he arrived to pick up a passenger who requested his services.”
Both Cancun taxi drivers remain imprisoned. “For this offense, this Social Representation will request the Mobility Institute of the State of Quintana Roo to cancel the licenses of Enrique “N” and Javier Isaías “N” to provide services as taxi drivers. In addition, they could face a sentence of up to 37 years in prison,” the FGE stated.
