Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun taxi driver has been arrested after allegations of assaulting a city Uber driver. The arrest took place Thursday after a car window was allegedly shattered with a bb gun.
In a brief message, Ayuntamiento de Benito Juárez (Cancun City Hall) posted a statement. “The Benito Juárez Municipal Secretary of Public Safety and Traffic detains a taxi driver after allegedly assaulting a unit and the driver of a digital platform.
“The alleged perpetrator has already been arrested by authorities. (Information in progress).”
The alleged assault happened in the Cancun Hotel Zone Thursday at Kilometer 5. It was shortly after 10:00 a.m. when an Uber arrived at a hotel to drive tourists to the airport.
When the Uber driver opened the trunk to load the suitcases, the driver’s door window shattered from a shot. A small hole was left in the bottom of the window. The Uber driver was able to identify the taxi believed responsible.
Elements of the Tourist Police station in the Cancun Hotel Zone responded after receiving reports of firearm detonations. When agents arrived at the scene, they interviewed those involved and witnesses who confirmed no gunfire but a direct attack by a taxi driver against the Uber driver.
The taxi driver was quickly located and arrested since witnesses were able to give police his cab number.
“Both vehicles were seized and both drivers were arrested and taken to the Municipal Secretary’s facilities where responsibilities were determined,” explained José Pablo Mathey, Secretary of Public Security of Cancun.
