Cancun, Q.R. — Hundreds of additional hands have been hired to speed up the construction process of the Cancun Nichupté Bridge. The bridge, which is scheduled for a September inauguration, is approximately 60 percent finished.
Juvenal Reyes Marrufo, the Cancun General Secretary of the Autonomous Confederation of Workers and Employees of Mexico (Catem), says hundreds of extra personnel have been added to the workforce that now makes up around 5,000 people to reinforce labor on different fronts.
He said the goal is to complete the project more quickly since it has an inauguration date for the end of September by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Marrufo says currently, the overall bridge project has a general progress rate of more than 60 percent.
“We have more than 5,000 employees working the Nichupté bridge. And regarding the timeframe of the construction work, we must say that we have more than 60 percent of the work completed. The work is progressing on time and in the correct manner with all the labor from Catem,” he explained.
The workforce increase was made after an official tour of the bridge project August 15. At the time, José Alberto Alonso Ovando, the General Director of the State Strategic Projects Agency (Agepro), toured the entire project but did not provide a detailed progress report.
The multi-billion peso project is being built by Ingenieros Civiles Asociados (ICA) and overseen by the Agencia de Proyectos Estratégicos (Agepro) in coordination with the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT).
