Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta says new traffic lights will be installed in an area known for accidents. The lights are being installed along 135th Avenue after a March 10 intersection accident left a motorcycle driver dead.
The female driver of the car who is alleged to have hit the motorcycle has since been arrested. Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit (SMSCyT) police arrested 40 year old Connie “N” from her demo vehicle after the deadly collision Monday.
She is facing charges of negligent homicide after the SM 332 traffic accident that left a motorcyclist dead. The accident occurred when the red “Auto Demo” car collided with a blue Italika motorcycle on 135th Avenue. The driver of the bike was thrown into roadside vegetation where paramedics pronounced him dead.
Residents along Mallorca announced a public demonstration due to the high number of accidents and lack of traffic lights. Residents of the Polígono Sur neighborhood had staged a protest for Wednesday morning, however, Peralta first announced traffic lights would be installed.

“One of our commitments is to continue modernizing the city’s traffic light network. We’re going to install the first ones at the intersections of 135th and Mallorca Avenues and 135th and 127th Avenues, which is precisely what citizens are requesting,” said Mayor Ana Paty Peralta in an interview.

“As a government, he emphasized, we will always be open to dialogue and the requests of the people of Cancun. When the community comes together, it’s a positive thing, but I want to tell them that there is a clear commitment to addressing this request,” she said.
Peralta explained that the work to install the traffic lights on 135th Avenue has already gone through the budget and other approval processes, saying the project of the traffic lights will be completed by next month.
“We will continue investing in more traffic lights in the city. We were historically behind on traffic lights because the city has grown so much. We started in 2023 with the first Safe Crossings, we will continue in 2024, and 2025 will not be far behind,” she said.
