Cancun beaches record over 7,400 sea turtle nests in 2024

Cancun, Q.R. — During the 2024 sea turtle nesting season, more than 978,000 eggs were safeguarded along Cancun beaches. Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, reported that through the General Directorate of Ecology, a notable effort was made to protect sea turtles.

She says according to their figures, more than 978,000 eggs from 7,429 nests in 54 corrals along the 12 kilometers of the Cancun coast were protected in 2024. Of those, 950,817 hatchlings were released into the sea.

Peralta said the turtles that hatched and were released include white, loggerhead, hawksbill and leatherback.

She highlighted that since first sea turtle sighting in early May, ecology staff implemented a comprehensive program to monitor the nesting areas and provide informative talks and ongoing training.

During 2024, White Tortoise (Chelonia mydas): nests: 7,346, eggs: 969,240 and released offspring: 942,441. For Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta): nests: 71, ggs: 7,777 and eleased offspring: 7,316

Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata): nests: 11, eggs: 1,144, and released offspring: 1,060. Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) arrived to create one and lay 56 eggs.
