Cancun authorities step up beach security after recent shooting

Cancun, Q.R. — Security has been increased along Cancun beaches after recent events involving drug dealing criminal gang members. Pablo Gutierrez Fernandez, the Secretary of the Benito Juarez City Council, reported the agreed increase in security after a recent meeting.

Additional security will be implement in the Cancun Hotel Zone, he says, following the violent events that have occurred in recent days. According to Gutierrez, surveillance will be reinforced throughout the tourist area.

City and state officials made the agreement after a Thursday meeting that also included federal officials with the aim of fine-tuning security strategies in the tourist area.

The meeting was also attended by members of the Navy, the National Guard and the State Attorney General’s Office, with whom, he said, they continue to work in close coordination with the hotel sector.

Additional personnel as well as a more efficient use of security cameras is being implemented along Cancun beaches.

“The hotel sector also supports the surveillance of our beaches. Strategy was reinforced with a meeting with the different federal forces for better coordination between all levels of government,” he said.

According to Gutierrez, patrols on beaches, as well as throughout the Hotel Zone’s main Kukulcán Boulevard, will be increased in addition to other strategic security measures that will be carried out by the Attorney General’s Office.

These new security strategies will also involve Cancun’s nautical sector regarding the rental of jet skis, a form of get-away transportation used by gunmen in both deadly attacks this year.

Gunmen flee on a jet ski after a targeted Cancun Hotel Zone shooting October 2 that left a criminal gang member dead in the sand.

Gutierrez says surveillance systems among the Cancun hotel sector will be strengthened in coordination with the city’s C5 system. This strategy will be joint between the city and the hotel sector and include more frequent monitoring, especially in the beach areas in order to improve security.
