Authorities report man died of brain infraction while in Cancun police custody

Cancun, Q.R. — Authorities say an autopsy on a man who died while in police custody Tuesday died from a brain infarction. The State Attorney General (FGE) released the report early Tuesday afternoon after the man died in police custody Tuesday morning.

The incident happened between 2:00 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. after the man was arrested from a hotel for disturbing public order. While in police custody, the man, reported by local media to be an American tourist of around 50, died.

He was pronounced dead in his jail cell after his arrest by the Tourist Police in the Cancun Hotel Zone. Staff from the hotel where he was arrested called police.

Prior to the release of the official cause of death by the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) reported late Tuesday morning that the man was arrested in a hotel after being reported for disturbing public order. He was found to be under the influence of alcohol and transferred to the police station.

Early Tuesday afternoon, the FGE released an official statement saying “the FGE of Quintana Roo reports that after the registration of a dead person of foreign origin in the municipality of Benito Juárez, the corresponding autopsy has been carried out which indicates that the death was derived from a cerebrovascular event, a brain infarction.

“The Attorney General’s Office will continue to investigate the protocol and the actions of the authorities when detaining the person. This institution reaffirms its commitment to guarantee and comply with the proper integration of the investigation to clarify the facts.”
