American woman detained at Cancun International after luggage search

Cancun, Q.R. — An American traveler was detained inside the Cancun International Airport Tuesday for possession of unclaimed money. The unnamed woman, who had arrived to Cancun at Terminal 3, was found carrying $55,000 USD.

National Guard were carrying out prevention and surveillance inspections at Terminal 3 of the Cancun International Airport when they received a report from Customs. The report detailed the arrival of a U.S. passenger with cheques in excess of the allowed amount to enter the country without declaring.

National Guard personnel searched the woman’s luggage, finding two cheques. One was for $45,000 USD and another for $10,000, the equivalent to approximately 1 million pesos.

In compliance with the federal government’s National Public Security and Zero Impunity strategies, members of the National Guard, with support from the National Customs Agency of Mexico, detained a person from the United States for not having declared the money to the corresponding authority, National Guard explained in a statement Wednesday.

She was read the Rights for Persons in Detention and registered in the National Registry of Detentions. Along with the cheques, she was made available to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office (FGR) in Cancun for the corresponding investigation.
