Cancun, Q.R. — While no arrests were made, National Guard did secure a suitcase of crystal meth from the Cancun International Airport. The incident was reported over the weekend at Terminal 2 when a man approached authorities for help.
He said he had been hastily given two suitcases in the parking lot for him to take to the baggage check-in area. The man, reported to be a foreign citizen, was at the airport when a complete stranger “insisted” he take the two suitcases to the baggage area before disappearing.
The citizen, who suspected something was not right, approached National Guard personnel and explained what had happened moments before. Using a K9 sniffer dog, both suitcases were inspected with one being positively marked by the dog for an illegal substance.
Upon further inspection, National Guard personnel located six packages of possible crystal meth. “Six solid objects in the shape of a tube were found inside, covered with grey tape, measuring approximately 46 x 8 centimetres, containing a narcotic with characteristics similar to the synthetic drug crystal,” the National Guard reported.

The second suitcase contained only clothing. Both were secured and the suspected narcotics from the first suitcase tested for positive identification.

In a statement, Guardia Nacional said that a search for the stranger who hastily handed over the two suitcases was deployed, but the person was not found. Authorities did not say if the incident was captured on airport security cameras.
“The suitcases and the possible drugs were seized and made available to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office where the corresponding investigations will continue,” they said.
