Cancun, Q.R. — In the past several months, 37 Cancun police officers have been fired from the city force for misconduct. Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta says the officers were fired due to citizen complaints and abuse of authority.
There are also another 15 being investigated.
“To date, we have 37 members of the Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit who have been discharged either due to complaints from citizens or due to some situation of abuse of authority.
“We are doing an exhaustive analysis and review of the corporation. We have extremely committed and very valuable police officers, but those who do not have that same vision are not welcome,” Peralta said.
“We have to be the best police in the state and be one of the best in the country. Cancun needs an institution of high quality. There are no excuses here. Anyone who does not fulfill their duty, if they are not honest and do an efficient job will leave as they have been leaving,” she explained.
José Pablo Mathey Cruz, head of the Municipal Secretariat of Public Security and Transit, says there are another 15 officers under investigation.
“There are other open files against elements that are being investigated (…) we have other investigations on the horizon. I’m talking about 15 more people,” he said.
He said police officers, upon being discharged, have the right to compensation like any job, but obviously it’s not 100 percent because they were involved in some event, but they are given a part.”
Regarding the 37 elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security and Municipal Transit who were recently discharged, Mathey Cruz said the majority were sanctioned for having committed acts of corruption, physically assaulting people and arbitrary arrests, among other crimes.
He said the discharged officers and their criminal history will be added to Plataforma México so they will not be able to be part of another police corporation after being dismissed from the Municipal Police.
