Mayor continues to receive resounding support in favor of Playa del Carmen name change

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Mayor Estefanía Mercado continues to receive support with the proposal to change the municipality’s name. Hundreds continue to turn out for the public consults being held around the municipality in favor of the name change.

More than 500 people gathered in the Luis Donaldo Colosio neighborhood where the second of four citizen forums took place. The Mayor requires social support for the constitutional reform project to change the name of the municipality of Solidaridad to Playa del Carmen.

“During the democratic exercise, the common denominator was the enthusiastic citizen participation that increasingly supports this constitutional reform project promoted in an effort to reinforce the identity of Playa del Carmen,” Mercado said.

She said the name of Playa del Carmen will “root the history and position the tourist destination, which is recognized internationally with the official name that is proposed and not by Solidaridad.”

Prior to the citizen forum, in an interview with the media, Estefanía Mercado clarified that the municipal change of name does not represents an expense to the residents of Playa del Carmen.

“If there were to be a name change, it would not represent any cost for the citizens. It is false that there will be a cost in the procedures that the citizens of Playa del Carmen will have to carry out when changing Birth Certificates, for example.

“At some point, if the people of Solidaridad decide to change the name to Playa del Carmen, no document will have to be changed, all will be completely valid,” she said.

At this second forum, the Secretary General of the City Council, Luis Herrera Quiam, announced the objectives of the constitutional reform project to change the name of the municipality, assuring that the impact will be positive.

The municipal official commented that this legal process, provided it is endorsed by the people, will be presented to the Council whose members must analyze it, and if necessary, approve it to subsequently submit it to the consideration of the XVIII Legislature, which, in turn, would have to send it to all the municipalities for their support, since it is a constitutional reform.
