Capsized boat dumps over two dozen tourists into the sea off the island of Cozumel

Cozumel, Q.R. — More than two dozen people were plucked from the sea Sunday evening when their boat overturned. A group of approximately 30 tourists were on board a Cozumel vessel when, according to local reports, it was hit by a wave and capsized.

A wave hitting the side of the vessel has been reported as the unofficial cause of the capsize in what appears to be a calm sea. January 4, 2026.

The incident was recorded in the southern coastal area of Cozumel around 6:00 p.m. where the group were seen clinging to the bottom of their overturned boat a few hundred meters from the shore.

According to early reports, a wave struck the side of the boat, causing it to lose stability and capsize.

There are other reports that claim the boat was over capacity and speeding through the water which caused its instability.

Several nearby boat owners rushed to the area to rescue the tourists who were forced into the sea. Everyone on board was found in the water wearing lifejackets. The local Port Authority has not issued a statement on the Sunday evening incident.

An official cause for the sinking of the boat that dumped its crew and passengers into the sea has not been determined.
