Authorities say highway sinkhole outside Akumal likely manmade

Akumal, Q.R. — The hole that appeared Thursday night on the federal highway at the height of the Akumal bridge has been repaired. Jaqueline Martínez, coordinator of Municipal Civil Protection said CFE was called in because when they opened the hole, they found an electrical pipeline.

Once CFE made the necessary repairs, the ground was filled in and the asphalt top, repaired. Martinez said the hole was not a cenote, but was likely due to previous work in the area.

“We have concluded that it was not a natural geological phenomenon as such, but rather anthropic, meaning that unfortunately, it was likely caused by man,” he said.

Due to the size of the hole and the risk of an accident, the National Guard maintained guard at night.
