Autopsy to determine cause of death of man found inside cavern

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The body of a man was found Monday inside a cenote cavern in Playa del Carmen. Witnesses reported seeing the now-deceased drinking in the company of two others before he was found dead.

The incident happened Monday around 2:30 p.m. when police were notified of a body inside the Yaxché cenote. The body of the man, who has not been officially identified, was found floating in water.

Authorities arrived to cordon off the area while a rescue team removed the man’s body from inside the cavern. Medial personnel confirmed that the man no longer had vital signs. The cause of death has not yet been officially determined, although preliminary reports suggest a possible drowning.

Authorities are waiting the results of the autopsy to clarify the circumstances of the death.
