Cancun, Q.R. — Firemen were called to an apartment in the city’s Puerto Cancun area Tuesday. An electrical short circuit in an air conditioner inside a third floor apartment has been deemed the cause of the fire.
Cancun firefighters were able to quickly control the fire from spreading to the rest of the apartment as well as other floors. The room where the air conditioner was being used was completely destroyed by fire.
There were no injuries reported other than one person being treated at the scene for bad nerves.
In a briefing, the SSC (Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana) said “a fire outbreak is under control due to short circuit in apartment in Benito Juárez. The Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC) of the State of Quintana Roo reports that on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 21, a fire broke out inside an apartment located in the Puerto Cancún area in Cancun.
“Immediately afterward, members of the Heroic Fire Department, Municipal Civil Protection, Tourist Police and State Police responded to the scene to control and mitigate the fire, implementing the corresponding safety protocols and proceeding with the preventive evacuation of the area’s residents.
“After initial investigations, the fire allegedly started due to a short circuit in an air conditioning system with no injuries reported. Only material damage was reported inside the affected property.
“The Citizen Security Secretariat reiterates its commitment to working in coordination with emergency and civil protection authorities to safeguard the safety of the population and maintain security in all areas of the state.”
Bomberos Cancun also made a brief report saying “a call was received by the Cancun Fire Department’s emergency line reporting a fire in the engine room of an apartment located on the third floor of a residential complex in Puerto Cancún.

“Thanks to the prompt response and coordination of firefighters, the fire was contained in a timely manner, preventing it from spreading to other areas of the building.
“As part of safety protocols, an inspection was conducted on the surrounding levels, and the residents were evacuated preventively, ensuring their safety at all times.
“During the work, Cancún Civil Protection paramedics provided medical care to a resident who suffered a nervous breakdown, with no other injuries reported. We appreciate the cooperation of the complex’s security personnel and the residents for maintaining calm during the incident.”
