Kantunilkín, Q.R. — Forestry firefighters were busy over the weekend after a garbage fire ended up scorching land and five vehicles in the town of Kantunilkín.
The fire occurred in Kantunilkín in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas west of Cancun where firemen report that a landowner set fire to old brush and garbage. Leaving the fire unattended, flames quickly spread with the help of wind.
The Director of Municipal Civil Protection, Alejandro Erosa Betancourt, says that the fire spread very fast due to the extremely dry vegetation and strong winds, adding that by the time members of the fire brigade arrived, the fire was out of control.
Before it was completely extinguished, a large section of land along with five vehicles were destroyed due to the intentionally-set burn.
Already this season, two garbage fires in the municipality of Tulum required assistance of forest firefighters after flames quickly spread out of control, scoring more than 10,000 square meters of land.
