Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Playa del Carmen lifeguards saved two men from a near drowning Wednesday. The men were reportedly drinking on the beach before they entered the water and began to have trouble staying afloat.

An on-duty lifeguard noticed both men struggling while trying to swim. Other beachgoers who watched as the men were being returned to the beach reported seeing them drinking before going in. Municipal police and Civil Protection personnel responded to the 5:30 p.m. report of the Wednesday evening incident.
Emergency services were made aware of the near drownings off a beach area of 38th Avenue after both were rescued by lifeguards. After their return to the sand, both men were assessed and showed signs of intoxication.
They were also found to be stable and not in need of a hospital transfer.
