Nautical services feel significant tourism increase around the state

Cozumel, Q.R. — Cozumel is being considered the first port destination of Quintana Roo. As of May 31, over 550 ships with more than 1.8 million cruise passengers have docked the island.

Tourism in the state has strengthened and diversified, which for the island of Cozumel, has meant an increase in visitors. Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa has reported that as of May 31, 557 cruise ships arrived at the port of Cozumel, 11.4 percent more than in the same period of 2022.

The amount of cruise ship passengers has also incresaed from 1,023,538 during the same period of 2022 to 1,853,238 this year, the equivalent to an 81.1 percent increase.

She reported that ferry passengers between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen have also increased. Up until May 31, 727,292 passengers have used the service, an increase of 16.2 percent over the same period last year.

Through the Ro-Ro ferry service at the Calica-Cozumel-Calica route, 151,294 passengers traveled that route between January 1 and May 31, which represents an increase of 4.7 percent compared to 2022.

Lezama says tourist and minor nautical tourism vessels have also seen an increase with 74,145 passengers aboard 3,405 boats as of May 31 of this year. That figure too, is also up from 2022 by 30.5 percent.

Lezama says that for 2023, Cozumel is anticipating the arrival of more than 3.8 million cruise ship passengers.
