Municipal authorities close Tulum cement plant after black water inspection

Tulum, Q.R. — Municipal authorities have closed a cement plant in the municipality of Tulum after public complaints of contamination. Tulum Civil Protection visited the plant Wednesday after photos of blackened water being drained from the site was posted Tuesday across social media.

Photos of black, oily water was seen being drained from the site.

Municipal authorities moved ahead with the suspension of the Concretos MX plant located near cenote Yax-Muul after their visit. The plant is currently prohibited from using their drainage system after they were found in noncompliance with safety measures and proper management of industrial waste.

On Tuesday, residents posted photos of a dark, oily liquid seeping from a hole under the cement plant’s perimeter wall. The drainage hole in the bottom of the concrete wall allowed the black discharge to leave the site and enter nearby jungle.

Environmental authorities have since collected soil and water samples for laboratory analysis to determine whether or not the contaminants have reached the water table.
