Island authorities dealing with eighth abandoned vessel found on Isla Mujeres shores

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Another abandoned boat reported by island residents had Isla Mujeres authorities investigating Thursday. The vessel was spotted empty early Thursday morning in the Punta Sur coastal area.

The makeshift vessel was able to quietly make landfall without being detected. According to the police report, the boat was reported seen at 2:11 a.m. Thursday. Navy personnel and the Port Authority were also made aware of the abandoned boat.

The vessel is believed to have actually made landfall late Wednesday since some residents reported seeing it around 11:00 p.m., however, police were not notified until just after 2:00 a.m. Thursday.

Since November of 2021, police have located eight abandoned vessels along the island’s shores. To date, they have captured 34 people who made Isla Mujeres landfall in those boats.

The last report was made in mid-April when islanders reported watching seven people climb out of a vessel that made landfall during the early morning hours.
