Federal police find two monkeys in Chetumal suitcase

Chetumal, Q.R. — Federal Police are responsible for the discovery and rescues of two young howler monkeys from a suitcase in Chetumal. The young monkeys were discovered during a vehicle inspection when the driver was pulled over for a traffic breach.

During an inspection of the vehicle, officers say they heard noises coming from a suitcase. Upon opening, they found the two young monkeys.

Both specimens were handed over to the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection where they were given a physical examination. Officers say the monkeys, one male and one female, are approximately two to three months old.

They were subsequently transferred to the Payo Obispo Zoo in the city of Chetumal where a second physical examination was performed at the zoo. The driver and his two companions were taken into police custody.
