Mexico City, Mexico — A Canadian man and a Mexican woman were arrested at the International Airport of Mexico City when they tried to board a plane to Cancun while carrying over $200,000 USD in cash.
The Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection says federal elements of the Regional Security Division located the cash when they checked the couple’s luggage in an X-ray machine and observed irregular objects in one of their carry-on suitcases. Upon review, they found $216,220 USD in hidden cash.
Police requested the necessary documentation to verify the legal origin of the money and the corresponding declarations of tax authorities, however, the couple replied that they did not have any of the legal documentation required to travel with the cash.
The man and woman, along with their cash, were made available to the Federal Public Ministry Agent.
