Cancun prison guard shot to death in broad daylight leaving shift

Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun prison guard was shot to death in broad daylight Tuesday outside the facility he worked at. The shooting was captured on city C5 surveillance cameras that showed an adult male in a red shirt aiming a gun at the downed custodian.

Security cameras captured the prison guard, Jonás Gregorio”M”, being shot several times before the gunman fled. State Police activated a Red Code in search of the gunman, however, arrests have not been announced.

The shooting happened outside the Social Reintegration Center (Cereso) in SM 99 of Cancun Tuesday morning when the man was leaving work. He was shot point blank while walking toward his vehicle.

In a brief message, the State Attorney General (FGE) reported “the FGE of Quintana Roo reports that it began an investigation into events that occurred in the streets of Supermanzana 99 in the municipality of Benito Juárez, where a guard was killed by gunshots.

“This autonomous body regrets this loss and reaffirms its commitment to investigate and locate those responsible for acts of violence that occur in the state in order to guarantee the tranquility of the citizens and all those who visit Quintana Roo.”

The executed man was an element of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) assigned to the Cancun prison.

Last week, an off-duty female prison guard was shot while outside her Cancun home. The female officer was with the Cancun Municipal Police. She was reported to be a detention officer with Centro de Retención Municipal.
