Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Four people in the municipality of Puerto Morelos have been detained for refusing to wear mouth masks in public reported Gumersindo Jiménez Cuervo, director of Public Security and Transit.
“These are people who resisted and, well, we had to initiate procedures. Of the four, one was a national tourist and the others were local,” he explained adding that the arrest of four people is a small figure compared to the number of people they actually deal with.
He says citizens need to comply with the preventative measures.
His words come at a time when the government of Puerto Morelos has begun reinforcing sanitary measures among residents and tourists. Juanita Chacón Canché from the office of the municipal Secretariat for Social Development also says the reinforcement is necessary.
“It is very important to continue to strengthen sanitary measures such as the correct use of face masks, the application of antibacterial gel and constant hand washing, which are the basic actions to prevent coronavirus infections,” she said adding that areas where there are greater amounts of people traffic are being monitored.
“We are strengthening prevention actions in the municipality given the increase in infections that have been registered in Quintana Roo in recent weeks, because only by working as a team can we cope with the disease,” she added.
Gumercindo Jiménez Cuervoc said that police continue to distribute masks as an additional measure to face the pandemic.
Last week, officials said more than a dozen people were arrested over a weekend for being found in public without mouth masks. They were detained after refusing to wear one.
