Tulum, Q.R. — An electrical explosion on Tulum Avenue caused an underground fire and left central businesses without power. Firemen were at the scene of the underground explosion Tuesday morning that created smoke and fire in front of the Chilam Balam Hotel.

Tulum firemen tracked the explosion to an underground wiring box belonging to the CFE. The explosion and subsequent fire damaged a nearby craft store. Firefighters were successful at putting out the fire and stopping it from reaching other businesses.
Personnel from the CFE confirmed the explosion was the result of a short in the electrical wiring and cut power to the entire avenue to make the necessary repairs.

An engineer from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) reported that it was necessary to suspend power along the entire affected section to open manholes and repair the damaged lines. He estimated the work to take at least three hours with direct impacts on area businesses and residents.
