Othón P. Blanco, Q.R. — At least six school bus students were seriously injured in an accident Monday. According to information obtained, brakes on the 20-year-old bus failed as the driver neared a corner.
The bus ended up on its side in roadside vegetation. Residents from nearby towns arrived to help the students exit the bus through broken windows. The students were traveling from a school in the community of Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez, a town near the Campeche border, at the time of the accident.
Three of the injured students were transferred to the Mayan community of Xpujil for treatment while two young men, who had more serious injuries, were taken to the Chetumal General Hospital.
Due to the remoteness of the accident site, official help took time to arrive. The school bus was on its way to the community of Caobas when it overturned.
