Cancun, Q.R. — Óscar Montes de Oca, the Attorney General of the State, says 10 criminal gang members have been jailed. Of the 10 captured, one is believed to be the regional leader of a Quintana Roo cell.
According to Montes de Oca, one of the men, Luis N who goes by the name “El Lucifer”, was part of those captured. He has been the regional cell leader of the Quintana Roo Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) since February of 2021 and is believed responsible for the kidnappings of antagonistic criminal groups to obtain information before ordering them killed.
Montes de Oca said that this CJNG leader also recruited people to continue operating in the north of the state by promising them work as a private security guards. However, they were sent to Quintana Roo and forced to participate in criminal activities, mostly as hired assassins.
El Lucifer became leader after the arrest of his predecessor “Triquis”, who was arrested on February 16, 2021. Their current investigation also includes a man who goes by “El Guayabo”, who served as the second leader of this criminal group. He was the head of the hitmen’s cells and ordered killings.
Montes de Oca reported that they know El Guayabo used the National Electoral Institute on several occasions to change his name. He currently has at least seven outstanding criminal proceedings against him in the state of Jalisco.
The other eight detained include two women and six men. They are believed hired assassins of the criminal cell, receiving their orders directly from “El Guayabo”. Montes de Oca said that after an interview, most of them reported having arrived in the state of Quintana Roo about a month ago after being hired to work in homes through a digital lodging platform.
