Prosecutors add extortion of Isla Mujeres businesses to list of charges

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — An Isla Mujeres suspect has been ordered to remain in pretrial detention on new charges of extortion. David “N” was arrested in mid-September in SM 212 of Cancun on drug related offences.

Shortly after his arrest, police began an investigation against him for Isla Mujeres businesses extortion where he charged floor right fees from Playa Mujeres businesses. On Wednesday, a Cancun judge agreed with the prosecutor’s findings.

In a statement, the Attorney General’s Office (FGE) reported that they had obtained the second charge against David “N”, the second being extortion. According to the FGE, David “N” is accused of being “the leader of a criminal cell which operated mainly in the Playa Mujeres area in the municipality of Isla Mujeres and in some parts of Benito Juárez (Cancun).

“His modus operandi was through jet skis with armed people who threatened and demanded that the managers of various establishments pay the floor right fee every 20 days.”
