Police continue search for men detonating firearms on Cancun Hotel Zone beach

Cancun, Q.R. — Police continue their search for a group of armed men that were reported detonating firearms in the Cancun Hotel Zone. On Tuesday afternoon, police received the report of men on jet skis shooting firearms before fleeing.

The incident happened in the Playa Langosta area of the Cancun Hotel Zone where witnesses said the group fired “at least 20 times” before fleeing. Agents of the Quintana Roo Police, National Guard and armed forces arrived at the site and began a search for the men, who were said to have fled toward Puerto Juarez.

The beach was emptied of people while authorities investigated. While no arrests were announced, however, authorities did seize three jet skis. Security elements were also sent to nearby Isla Blanca in the municipality of Isla Mujeres.

There were no injuries reported.

In a brief statement, Cancun Police Chief Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez acknowledged the incident saying, “The institutions that make up the Coordination Group for the Construction of Peace and Security, attended a report of firearm detonations in the Hotel Zone of Cancun. Thanks to the rapid action of the elements, no injured persons were found and 3 jet skis were seized, where the alleged perpetrators were traveling. The search for said subjects continues,” he reported.

The site remains under surveillance.
