Playa del Carmen tourist trapped when concrete lid breaks on pedestrian avenue

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A young tourist from Chile was freed from a concrete lid by firemen after it gave way when she stepped on it. The incident happened late Friday morning in Playa del Carmen’s pedestrian only area of Fifth Avenue.

City authorities were requested for assistance after a concrete cast lid broke. The young woman’s left leg became trapped in the jagged edges of the broken box cover as she walked over it.

Personnel from Civil Protection along with city firemen were at the 10th Street location where they found the young woman sitting on the avenue in the company of another woman.

Firemen used tools to break the jagged concrete pieces that prevented the woman from moving. She was eventually freed and treated for minor injuries.

The cover was installed during the remodeling of Fifth Avenue less than three years ago. The remodeling of the city’s pedestrian avenue was carried out by the previous administration.

Last week, private businesses along sections of the remodeled avenue began corrective work on the project that has already begun to deteriorate.
