Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A piece of floating island was spotted off the coast of Isla Mujeres Thursday sparking curiosity among those who saw it. The floating piece of land, which was outfitted with living trees, was seen in the region of Isla Blanca off the mainland continental zone of Isla Mujeres.
Elements of the National Guard were notified of the floating mystery land. The chunk of land eventually came to rest at Isla Blanca in the municipality of Isla Mujeres. An inspection revealed it was made of a plywood floor and buoyant from plastic bottles. It was deemed to be a piece of the artificial island that belonged to the man-made Joysxee bottle island that was created by environmental activist Richart Sowa.
The Joysxee Floating Bottle Island was started in 2007. Over the years as it grew, it consisted of more than 150,000 plastic bottles. The plastic floating island once attracted global attention. It is listed as “closed” and its social media page no longer updated.
There is no official word on the owner of the plastic island. It is believed that the recent bouts of bad weather from the passing of Amanda and Cristobl detached a section of the artificial island.
