Passenger bus bound for Cancun catches fire on highway

Cancun, Q.R. — On Tuesday, highway motorists alerted the driver of a passenger bus that his unit was on fire. The bus was nearing the El Tintal – Playa del Carmen highway junction when the driver became aware that flames were shooting out the back top portion of his engine.

After stopping and unloading his passengers, the entire bus was quickly engulfed in fire. Other passing buses stopped to help, but to no avail. The flames spread fast, consuming the entire unit within minutes.

The bus had left Merida with a final destination for Cancun. Emergency services met the bus on the side of the highway to deal with the 5:00 p.m. incident. The bus emitted thick black smoke as it burned. Firemen were able to extinguish the flames, but not before the entire bus was destroyed.

There were no injuries reported. Authorities have not commented on a possible cause for the fire.
