Cancun, Q.R. — Reports of a journalist who was kidnapped and murdered in Cancun is false. Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez, the Secretary of Public Security for the state of Quintana Roo, clarified that the woman was not murdered.
In a briefing, Hernández Gutiérrez said that while the woman was taken against her will, it was a personal case of revenge. In a statement he posted “regarding different publications related to the alleged murder of a journalist from Playa del Carmen this Friday, it is FALSE (…) it is a matter of revenge and personal differences.”
On Friday, reports of a female journalist being kidnapped in Cancun emerged. The unidentified woman reportedly works for a digital media company based in Playa del Carmen but both lives and works in Cancun.
She was found by area residents in Pardo Norte Friday, apparently bound by hands and feet, after being abandoned by her abductors. Elements of the Quintana Roo Police were called to the scene from where they were informed of her situation. The woman was transferred to a Cancun hospital with undisclosed injuries.
