Xochimehuacán, Puebla — One dead and 11 injured, five of them seriously, was the result of a gas explosion Sunday morning. The government of Puebla said the explosion happened at 2:40 a.m.
The explosions were the result of a gas leak from a clandestine intake on a private property, which was called in about an hour before the explosions began.
Several ambulances arrived at the scene to attend to the people who were affected by the explosion. They were transferred to Hospital General del Norte and the Hospital del Niño Poblano (HNP). In the HNP burn unit there are four minors, between 3 and 16 years old. Seven adults remain at the Hospital del Norte.
Prior to the explosion, State Civil Protection proceeded to evacuate the affected area within a radius of one kilometer. According to the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), 2,000 people were evacuated.
The state governor Luis Miguel Barbosa, stated at a press conference that had he not proceeded with the evacuation, the explosions would have caused a tragedy of enormous dimensions.
