Tulum, Q.R. — Saturday morning, a group of locals protested the construction of a stage for an upcoming New Year’s Eve event. The protesters said that the stage is being constructed on a coastal dune, which will cause damage.
Permits for the outdoor event were allegedly provided during the last administration when Victor Mas Tah was mayor. The large stage is being constructed to host a year end electronic music festival that will be held seaside.
The event will take place next to the entrance to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. Protesters demonstrated in front of the area where the stage was being set up. Concerned residents said the area lacks the infrastructure such as drainage and parking, to host such an event.
Aside from municipal permits, others doubted event organizers had proper permits such as an alcohol license. Some disagree with the city hosting electronic music festivals saying they go against the vocation of Tulum as a sustainable destination, adding that it will generate environmental and noise pollution, as well as insecurity.
