Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A large swordfish was the trophy for the crew aboard a boat off the coast of Isla Mujeres after the captain says they struggled for three hours to reel it in.
After nearly three hours, fishermen aboard Chachalaca managed to finally reel in the 340-pound swordfish before returning to land. Captain of the boat, Anthony Mendillo Jr., explained that it was a “fight” that lasted just over three hours.
The catch was recorded about 10 miles south of Isla Mujeres he says, adding that the struggle was not an easy one. He says the boat and tired crew arrived back at the dock just after 1:00 p.m. with their catch of the day, weighting in and taking photos with friends and family.
He recalled one of the last large catches was around 12 years ago when a 540-pound Blue Marlin was brought ashore after a similarly long battle.
