Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — In a joint operation carried out in Playa del Carmen, 18 members of an organized crime cell operating in Cancun have been taken off city streets.
According to the National Guard, the operation took place in coordination with the Quintana Roo Police. Those detained said they operated in Region 231 of Cancun and that they belong to a cell of the criminal gang, Los Pelones.
Alberto Capella Ibarra, the secretario de Seguridad Pública de Quintana Roo, reported that upon their detainment, police and members of la Guardia Nacional found numerous street doses of drugs that included marijuana, crack and cocaine as well as weapons, ammunition, cell phones and radio communication devices.
In a public report, Capella announced 18 men were taken into police custody in Playa del Carmen with the help of la Guardia Nacional and la Policía Estatal. Those arrested range in age from 18 to 31 and were from the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Veracruz, Quintana Roo, Hidalgo and Campeche.
