Gas tank explosion destroys home, business in Francisco Uh May

Tulum, Q.R. — An exploding gas tank in a town in the municipality of Tulum has left a family home and business in complete ruins.

The explosion occurred Friday afternoon around 1:20 p.m. in the community of Francisco Uh May, west of Tulum. Elements of the fire department were called to the scene of a fire where they found the entire top portion of the home completely engulfed in flames.

Attending authorities reported on top of the house sat a combination of three palapas that ignited due to the explosion.

In their report they say “The fire department was asked for support, who later arrived, but the palapas were already consumed. Medical units also arrived at the site and assessed the first injured person responding to the name of Jesús Balam Chimal, 15, originally from Francisco Hu-May”.

Homeowner, 50-year-old Luciano Balam Balam, was home at the time of the accident. Several others were treated on site for injuries.
