Acapulco, Guerrero — A tanker carrying a load of fuel exploded Monday after hitting a concrete retaining wall. Thick black smoke could be seen for kilometers, including from central Acapulco.
At least three people have been reported injured when the semi rammed into the wall on Scenic Avenue in Acapulco, Guerrero. According to preliminary information, the driver of the unit hit the wall when he was unable to brake.
The impact of the hit caused his fuel-loaded semi to explode. It was around 12:30 p.m. when the 20,000 liters of fuel went up in a ball of flames that shook nearby establishments.
An entire section of highway burned black from the fire, which had emergency personnel close the road for more than two hours. The highway that was closed was the main access road to the city’s International Airport.
The driver of the semi, along with the driver and one passenger in a combi, were injured during the blast. The semi was heading toward the city center when the accident happened. The driver of the unit is reported to be in stable condition.
