Dutch woman killed in Playa del Carmen vacation rental gas explosion

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A Dutch woman has been identified as the deceased in a gas explosion that happened in a vacation rental property in Playa del Carmen.

The explosion took place around 9:00 a.m. Friday in a vacation rental property in the the Selva Nova subdivision. Preliminary reports say a gas tank on the ground floor of an apartment complex she was renting exploded, leaving her with substantial second and third degree burns.

The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Kim Akker from Holland. Akker died in hospital Saturday from her injuries. A second person was reportedly injured in the explosion, but suffered only minor injuries.

Solidaridad mayor, Laura Beristain, confirmed the death of the young woman and says that she is committed to regulating these types of vacation rental properties, something she is already working on with the state.

“We are doing it with the Secretary of Tourism, Marisol Vanegas Pérez and with Ernesto Bartolucci, Director of Tourism. All of our colleagues are also interested in participating like the Red Cross, Business Coordinating Council, Canaco, Canacintra, Coparmex.

“We all want to have a safe place since security is an issue for everyone,” she explained.
