Cozumel, Q.R. — State authorities have begun the rehabilitation of a Cozumel sports field to the tune of 24 million pesos. The Bicentenario sports unit in Cozumel is being overhauled “after years of neglect”, reported Governor Mara Lezama.
The overhaul is being done in coordination with the Cozumel City Council headed by Juanita Alonso Marrufo. The money used is a joint state-municipal investment of more than 24 million pesos.
“The Bicentenario is a multidisciplinary space where here Cozumel athletes practice and play basketball and soccer. The field has hosted third division professional soccer and rugby matches, but since its creation in 2009, it has not received any rehabilitation,” Lezama explained.
The head of the Quintana Roo Sports Commission (CODEQ), Eric Arcila Arjona and the Secretary of Public Works, Irazú Sarabia May also highlighted the importance of the field which has been the scene of important events.
The rehabilitation of the field will include a new steel roof double dome, change of electrical wiring, repairing of the stands and a replacement field with 12,410 square meters of synthetic grass.
