Chetumal, Q.R. — A heavy machine operator died Friday in Chetumal after disturbing a large bee nest. The incident happened on the outskirts of the Universidad Modelo campus of Chetumal where he was clearing an area.
The 45-year-old, who was an employee of the private university, was operating a backhoe when he accidently hit the nest. The insects swarmed him and began stinging.
University personnel who saw what happened called Emergency 911 requesting assistance. A Medical Emergency Response Unit arrived who confirmed that the man was dead, likely due to anaphylactic shock.
