Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Personnel from the Federal Electricity Commission continue to inspect Isla Mujeres homes and businesses for illegal electrical hookups.
The company continues to battle the ongoing problem, which resulted in the discovery of 90 illegal electrical hookups on the island last year alone. Those found stealing electricity are fined, with penalties ranging from 300,000 to 900,000 peso.
The company also noted that last year, five businesses were found with altered meters, so this year, they are extending their inspections to include homes as well.
For the past week, a crew of eight CFE personnel have been going around the island making inspections in search of clandestine connections or altered (slowed) meters.
