Bus driver tries to beat train leaving 9 dead, 7 injured

San Juan del Río, Querétaro — In his eagerness to beat a train, the driver of a company transport bus in the community of La Valla left nine people dead and seven injured.

The accident happened in the community of La Valla in the municipality of San Juan del Río, Querétaro when the bus driver, carrying company personnel, tried to beat an oncoming train. The bus passed over the tracks as the train approached. It was dragged down the tracks and eventually came to a stop where authorities immediately reported eight dead.

Head of the State Coordination of Civil Protection of the State, Gabriel Bastarrachea Vázquez, gave a statement about the accident.

“Unfortunately, by an imprudent act, a public transport driver tried to beat the train with the consequence of the unit overturning. Unfortunately, we have counted eight deceased,” he said.

Since his statement, one more person has died.

Personnel from la Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil del Estado, along with police and emergency services of San Juan del Río, were transferred to the scene to provide support to the injured that were found trapped in the twisted metal debris of the accident.

Elements of the State Police have reported that the driver of the bus was immediately identified and taken to hospital for medical attention. After his recovery, he will be transferred to police facilities to begin criminal proceedings for the incident that left fatalities.
